Huangbailing Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section of the Huangbailing Formation is the Qingkeng-Huangboling section, measured between Qingkeng and Huangboling villages, Qingyang County (118°01’35” E, 30°37’00” N). It is the same section shared with the Qingkeng Formation. Qingkeng lies 6 km southeast of the seat of Youhua Township, or about 20 km east of the seat of Qingyang County. In the type section, the Huangbailing Fm is 342.50 m thick. The Huangbailing Formation was named by Zhang et al. (1951). The name is derived from Huangbailing Village in Youhua Township, Qingyang County, Chizhou City, southern Anhui Province. Originally the unit was called Huangbailing Series by Zhang et al. (1951) and was lowered in rank as Huangbailing Formation, a junior synonym of Huangbailing Formation, by Qian et al. (1964).
Synonym: (黄婆岭组); Huangboling Fm (spelling); Li and Jiang (1997, p. 260) proposed a wrongly spelled name, the Huangbaoling Formation, is an invalid synonym of Huangbailing Formation.
Lithology and Thickness
The Huangbailing Formation is a clastic sequence. It is divided into 4 lithological beds, from bottom up: 1, brownish yellow and bluish grey shale, intercalated with bluish grey and greyish green calcareous shale (160 m thick); 2, grey, yellowish green calcareous shale (94.5 m); 3, yellowish green and grayish green calcareous shale (52 m); and 4, bluish grey calcareous shale (36 m thick).
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Huangbailing Fm is in conformable contact with the underlying Hetang Fm. The lower boundary of the formation is defined by lithological changes from black siliceous shale or thin-bedded argillaceous limestone of Hetang Fm to yellow argillaceous shale at the base of the Huangbailing Fm.
Upper contact
The Huangbailing Fm is in conformable contact with the overlying Dachenling Fm. The upper boundary is defined by the appearance of argillaceous limestone at the base of overlying Dachenling Fm.
Regional extent
The Huangbailing Formation is exposed in the Jiangnan Slope and the Jiangbei Slope areas of South China Region, distributed in southeastern Anhui Province, from north to south, in Chuxian, Quanjiao, Jingxian, Qingyang, Guichi and Dongzhi counties. The thickness of the formation greatly increases southwestward, varying from 6 to 482 m.
